How hybrid vehicles work
A hybrid pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor and a battery. The car decides, second by second, which to use — so you burn less fuel without ever plugging in.
The key ideas
Electric at low speed
In traffic the motor often drives the car alone, with the engine switched off.
Regenerative braking
Slowing down turns the motor into a generator that recharges the battery.
HEV vs PHEV
A PHEV has a bigger battery you charge from a socket, for longer electric-only driving.
What changes in maintenance
The engine still needs oil; brakes last longer; the battery cooling vents must stay clean.
